USGAA Finals Leave San Francisco With Homework for 2027

The 2026 USGAA Finals brought the best Gaelic football, hurling, and camogie clubs from across the U.S. to the Irish Cultural Centre in Canton, Massachusetts.

For the San Francisco GAA, it was a weekend of tough competition, hard-fought games, and two appearances in national finals.

Five San Francisco clubs made the trip to Canton, with Clan na Gael, Cú Chulainn, Fog City Harps, Joseph Mary Plunketts, and Ulster representing the Western Division.

While the weekend did not produce a national championship for San Francisco, two Bay Area clubs reached their respective Ladies Gaelic Football finals, and every club had the opportunity to compete against some of the best teams in North America.

Clan na Gael Advances to the Final and a rematch with the boston shamrocks

Clan na Gael got San Francisco off to a strong start with a convincing performance in Saturday's Intermediate Ladies Gaelic Football semifinal against the Pittsburgh Banshees.

Clan controlled much of the game and came away with a 2:13 to 2:08 victory, earning a place in Sunday's final against the Boston Shamrocks.

The win set up a return to the national final for Clan na Gael, who had previously defeated Boston in the Intermediate final when the USGAA Finals were held in San Francisco in 2024.

Sunday's final was another hard-fought contest. Clan na Gael stayed within reach of the Boston Shamrocks deep into the game, but the home side ultimately pulled away in the closing minutes to claim the championship.

It was a disappointing finish for Clan, particularly after coming so close. But reaching the USGAA final represents another significant achievement for the club and for San Francisco GAA.

Fog City Harps and St. Brigid's: Another Classic REMATCH

If there is one rivalry that has come to define Ladies Gaelic Football at the USGAA Finals in recent years, it is Fog City Harps versus Chicago's St. Brigid's.

Last year, the Harps produced a dramatic come-from-behind victory over St. Brigid's to win the Senior Ladies Gaelic Football championship. This year, the two clubs met again. There was no semifinal between them. Their standing among the dominant clubs in North American Ladies Gaelic Football sent them straight to Sunday's final.

The game on the main pitch at the Irish Cultural Centre was another closely fought contest, with both teams battling through to the final minutes.

This time, St. Brigid's had the edge with just enough extra players to defeat Fog 1:13 to 0:12 to take the title.

For Fog, it was a heartbreaking end to another outstanding season. The rivalry with St. Brigid's continues to produce some of the most competitive Ladies Gaelic Football in North America, especially against Chicago's late-season homegrown talent. Sunday added another chapter to it.

A Tough Weekend for the Plunketts

Joseph Mary Plunketts faced the Worcester Fenians in the Junior B Hurling semifinal on Saturday.

The Plunketts were defeated by Worcester, bringing their USGAA campaign to an end.

But the result in Canton shouldn't overshadow what has been a tremendous year of growth for the club. The Plunketts not only competed at the USGAA Finals, but also represented San Francisco at the World Games in Waterford, Ireland, in July.

For a young San Francisco hurling club, the opportunity to compete on both the international stage in Waterford and the national stage in Canton represents significant development.

The experience gained this year will be another important part of the Plunketts' homework as they continue to build the club and prepare for what comes next.

Fog City Harps Juniors Fall in A level football

Fog City Harps also had a second team competing in Canton, with Fog's junior team taking on the Aisling Gaels in Junior A Ladies Football.

Aisling Gaels came away with the victory, bringing Fog's junior run to an end.

With both the senior and junior sides competing at the national level, the weekend was another reminder of the depth of Ladies Gaelic Football in San Francisco.

Ulster's Run Comes to an End

Ulster represented San Francisco in Senior Gaelic Football, facing Galway Boston in the semifinal.

The Western Division champions were defeated by Galway Boston, bringing their USGAA campaign to an end.

Galway Boston went on to defeat Padraig Pearses in the final to claim the Senior Gaelic Football championship, giving some additional perspective to the quality of the opposition Ulster faced in the semifinal.

Cú Chulainn Reaches the Camogie Semifinal

Cú Chulainn represented San Francisco in Senior Camogie, taking on Chicago's St. Mary's in the semifinal.

St. Mary's came away with the win, bringing Cú Chulainn's USGAA campaign to an end. But St. Mary's would not take home the title either, falling to Éire Óg in the final.

The Homework Starts Now

It’s easy to measure a USGAA Finals weekend by the number of trophies that come home.

By that measure, this was a disappointing weekend for the San Francisco GAA.

We hold ourselves to high standards. We expect our clubs to compete for national championships.

Every player and every club who made the trip to Canton gave everything they had. But this year, we did not bring home the hardware.

That disappointment is real. And it should be.

But neither did we come home empty-handed.

We come home with experience. We come home with a better understanding of what it takes to win at the highest level. We come home with lessons that will help our clubs get stronger, our players get better, and our clubs prepare for the next opportunity.

Five San Francisco clubs made the journey to Canton. Two reached national finals. Every club had the opportunity to measure itself against some of the best clubs in North America.

Now comes the homework.

What did we learn? Where do we need to improve? What do our clubs need to do differently? And what will it take to turn close games into wins and appearances in finals into championships?

Those are the questions San Francisco GAA will take back to Páirc na nGael.

The USGAA Finals in Canton are over. The work toward Chicago 2027 starts now.

Congratulations to all the players and all five San Francisco clubs who represented the Western Division in Canton.

And a special congratulations to Clan na Gael and Fog City Harps on reaching their respective USGAA Finals.

San Francisco GAA is proud of you.
